First XI in Pretoria

Independent Schools' Cricket Festival

AT THE SIDE OF THE SAINTS OVAL ARE First XI team members Paul Vincent, Matthew Tweddle, Captain Gareth Dukes and Ryan Sclanders. The First XI Saints are off to Pretoria next weekend (26 - 28 February) to take part in the annual Independent Schools' Cricket Festival hosted by St Alban's College. If you're near Menlyn at that time, go and have a look and a cheer. Good luck Saints... The programme of games is:

Independent Schools' Cricket Festival :
Thursday 25 (rained out) and Friday 26 February versus St John’s College (Affies oval)
Saturday 27 February versus Kearsney College (St Alban's Murray field - first field on the left next to the hockey astro). This is the day the rest of St Charles College will play Kearsney's cricket teams at Harwin Road and Botha's Hill
Sunday 28 February versus Cornwall Hill (Cornwall Hill oval A)

__________________________________________

Thursday 25 February in Pretoria was better suited to swimming as the rain fell all day and washed out the first day of the match against St John's College for Johannesburg.

Friday 26 February on the Affies oval vs St Joh's College (Johannesburg).

1st XI: Gareth Dukes (Capt), Gregory Ford, Dean Robinson, Ryan Sclanders, Paul Vincent, Mzamo Cele, Grant Stone, Mathewt Ford, Burton Weakley, Keagan Davids, Matthew Tweddle, Dexter Hobbs, Vaughn Moses.

After the disappointment of the first day of this two day encounter being rained out, play finally got under way a half hour late at 09:30 on Friday 26 February.
The pitch on the Affies main field looked as if it would be very tough to bat on early up and would then be pretty two paced all day. St Johns won the toss and must have come to a similar conclusion as they quickly chose to field.
This is always a dangerous tactic in a declaration game and one that opens a very real risk of fielding for a lengthy stretch if you cannot bowl your opponents out. The openers did a job on a very difficult pitch and  kept the St John's bowlers at bay, Dean Robinson was first to go and Ryan Sclanders continued his promising start to the season as he and Gregory Ford inched the score over the 40 mark when Sclanders was desperately unlucky to get bowled off his arm. Paul Vincent came to the wicket and batted beautifully for a well crafted 48 but was desperately unlucky not to get his fourth half century of the season. Gregory Ford, after doing all the hard work, lost concentration and was stumped for a very well played 42.
St Charles stumbled a bit on the difficult pitch where Hobbs, Vincent and Dukes perished in an effort to lift the momentum against the St John's spinners. Matthew Ford and Mzamo Cele started slowly and then finally wrested the initiative from the St John's cricketers. Cele ended with 38 not out while Matthew Ford (68) perished on the last ball of the innings for a second successive half century.
St Charles declared at 240 for 8 which was a top effort.
St John's battled to come to terms with the pitch and the accurate bowling of the Maritzburg team. They lost wickets regularly and at the end of the day they were hanging on at 130 for 8 with 9 fielders hovering like vultures around the batsman.
The St Charles lads were once again left on the edge of a well deserved win and will once again reflect on a couple of dropped catches that would have sealed victory for them.
Nevertheless it was a very good effort and a good result against a top cricketing school.

St Charles College: 240 for 8 declared
Gregory Ford 42, Paul Vincent 48, Mzamo Cele 38 not out, Matthew Ford 68

St John's College: 130 for 8
Grant Stone 3 for 35, Gareth Dukes 2 for 19, Matthew Tweddle 2 for 18
Result: Match Drawn

Saturday 27 February With the annual derby day against Kearsney College at Harwin Road and Botha's Hill today, the round of fixtures was completed in Pretoria at the Independent Schools' Cricket Festival on Murray field at St Alban's College as the Schools' two First XIs clashed.

1st XI: Gareth Dukes (Capt), Gregory Ford, Dean Robinson, Ryan Sclanders, Paul Vincent, Mzamo Cele, Grant Stone, Matthew Ford, Burton Weakley, Keagan Davids, Matthew Tweddle, Dexter Hobbs, Vaughn Moses.

Another toss lost, but this time it proved to be a critical one. Needless to say Kearsney won it.
Two days in a row proved too much for our top order as they crumbled to a disciplined and well focused attack. The Kearsney bowlers combined with some top-drawer fielding saw our side's very talented batters try and cross one bridge too far. It proved to be too much and although Grant Stone and Paul Vincent stuck around for both to get into the twenties, once they succumbed we crumbled and were out for 89.
Kearsney replied and at 6 for 2 were looking decidedly shaky, but two critical dropped catches saw them settle down and instead of 4 down for under 20 they started applying pressure and with Richard Pentecost in a particularly aggressive mood Kearsney passed our score in the 14th over

St Charles College: 89 all out
Grant Stone 23
Kearsney 93 for 3
Gareth Dukes 2 wkts

Result: Kearsney College won by 7 wkts

__________________________________________

Sunday 28 February The last match of the Festival was played at Cornwall Hill College in Irene. Cornwall Hill is a co-educatonal school for some 1700 children from Grade 000 to Grade 12.

1st XI: Gareth Dukes (Capt), Gregory Ford, Dean Robinson, Ryan Sclanders, Paul Vincent, Mzamo Cele, Grant Stone, Matthew Ford, Burton Weakley, Keagan Davids, Matthew Tweddle, Dexter Hobbs, Vaughn Moses.

St Charles bounced back with a convincing win over Cornwall Hill on their magnificent oval in Irene.
Losing the toss again we were put in to bat again. This time, though, the top three stuck it out and built a foundation upon which the middle order capitalised ending with a very useful total in 45 overs of 222 for 8.
Gareth Dukes led the way with a very good 68 while Gregory Ford (30) and Ryan Sclanders (37) contributed well to the effort. The day was highlighted by the magnificent bowling performance of Matthew Tweddle whose 7 wicket haul was well deserved for a number of solid performances on tour, skipper Dukes completed a top all-rounder’s performance with two wickets.

St Charles College   222for 8
Greg Ford 30, Ryan Sclanders 37, Gareth Dukes 68
Cornwall Hill 95 all out
Gareth Dukes 2 wkts for 18 and Matt Tweddle 7 for24

Result: St Charles won by 127 runs

Dodgy Maritzburg weather

Saints take on Kearsney, Pelham and dashing Dads

FROM A SPECTATING POINT OF VIEW the match of the day was down on J Richards field where the Prep First XI took on their fathers who thought they were still in charge. Well, charging around was about right, and erm, their uniforms were also very nice. Thanks to Coach Irons the sons gave their fathers a lesson in cricket. Fathers Waldo Saayman captained and organised and chivvyed, Mark Darroch fielded with energetic aplomb, Robert Hines kept, Vaughan Squires and Jimmy Koutsouris bowled while Redwaan Jassat provided an imposing presence at silly mid on. They and their sons gathered for a group photo at the drinks break with the scoreboard - boys: 58 for 2 after 11 overs. Umpires were Coach Rowan Irons and Grade 7 Nduduzo Ngcobo. And then then game was on. With Declan Cox retiring at 50 not out (because he is one of the nice lads to the Dads), the boys were all out for 211 after 27 overs - which is a run rate of 7.8. In reply, the Dads were all out for 181 - and this included a magnificent innings by Waldo Saayman who gracefully retired at 71 (not his age, his score). The boys won. Convincingly. Nuff said!

Perhaps this was the boys' lucky day, perhaps not, but on that self-same J Richards field earlier in the day, the Prep Third XI and the Pelham cricketers stood by as Saints Grade 7 Craig van der Merwe knocked the ball around for 103 not out. Awesome, my boy!

While the Saints' First XI were doing battle against Kearsney's Firsts on Murray field at St Alban's College in Pretoria, the Saints' Second XI took on their opposite numbers from Kearsney on our oval. The cricketing highlight of this match - and in fact of the whole day - was Khivaar Mohanlall's fabulous bowling performance of 8 wickets for 47 runs in 12.4 overs. In the photo below (thanks to Mr Kevin Rall for this photo) Khivaar leads two team members (Gareth Rall and Joel Barron) off the oval. Dundas Clark top-scored with 53 supported strongly by Jarryd Streicher (39*), Gareth Rall (27) and Joel Barron (22). The match ended in a good draw.

Pelham Senior Primary School visited us on various fields with their Second XI playing our Seconds on Jolivet Field. (The Saints Firsts meet Pelham on Monday afternoon for a 45-over, day-night game on Merchiston's oval - which promises to be a cracker after our close encounter with them in the Sunfoil day-night, 40-over game earlier this term.)

Here are some views on the campus on what was a Saturday with a little drizzle, a little wind, a little sun, quite a few clouds - and a lot to enjoy. Thankfully, the temperatures were bearable at about 25 degrees C. Thanks for the visit Dads, Kearsney College and Pelham Senior Primary School - it was great having you all here today - thanks for the games and well played to all. Thanks too to Kearsney and Pelham for hosting us to the many games played at Botha's Hill and Melville Road.

Saints Junior First XI

Winners of the Schools' Night League Trophy

AT TWO O'CLOCK TODAY ON A PERFECT SUMMER'S AFTERNOON at the Pietermaritzburg Oval in Alexandra Park the Saints Junior First XI took on the Merchiston Prep School First XI in the final of the Sunfoil Primary Schools' Night League. Batting first the Saints Zac Koutsouris and Luke Barnard got the innings off to a hard-driving start. The momentum they established never really slowed as St Charles Prep knocked up a competitive total of 113 for 5 in the 15 overs allotted to them - at a healthy run rate of 7.5.

The St Charles Prep School boys have spent the past week on their Outward Bound course in the Shongweni Valley finishing off with a 20km hike this morning in the steamy valley. Who would have expected them still to be that full of energy that they could then take a polished bowling and fielding attack to the Merchie Mudrats with such vigour? But that's just what the Saints did. With careful bowling and neat fielding, they pinned down Merchiston - who at no stage got ahead of the required run rate to finish the game needing 26 runs to win off the last ball.

Young Saint, Jody Saayman, was there when it mattered - he hit the only six in the game - a magnificent pull shot which arched into the advertising boards at deep point some 5m beyond the boundary rope, and he took a brilliant catch at cover point. Slick fielding from the team allowed quick reacting Saints' wicket keeper, Luke Barnard, to effect two run-outs and a rare stumping. That said, Merchiston were tough competitors, as were Pelham Senior Primary School who comprehensively challenged the St Charles Prep boys on the road to this final. In the end it was a wonderful team effort from a committed Saints team coached, as they are, by three superb cricket men: Rowan Irons, Chad Barron and Robbie Coutts.

Well played both teams and thanks for the game, Merchiston. Thanks also to Willowton Oil Mills, their sub-brand Sunfoil and their national marketing manager, Mr Hilton Cairns, for believing that tomorrow's Proteas start their lives in the great prep schools of the KZN Midlands - and for thus sponsoring this event to the R100 000 extent you did. Thanks also to Dr May Mkhize, wife of the Premier of KZN for stopping by to chat to the boys and for demonstrating that the Province, too, cares. Thanks finally to KZN Inland Cricket for providing the use of your impressive facilities.

There will be some tired preppie Saints tonight. Zzzzz well. Enjoy your mid-term, long-weekend break.

Second XI friendly

Maritzburg College seconds on Saints oval

IT WAS GREAT TO HAVE MARITZBURG COLLEGE Second XI visit us this afternoon for a friendly Twenty20 slap-and-giggle game of cricket. On a wicket which yielded little in the way of batting opportunities, the visitors knocked up 71 runs in their 20 overs. After a short break the Saints replied with some rash shots off the tight bowling which came their way resulting in a procession of Saints to and from the embankment - emphasising the difficulty the visitors had had in scoring runs in the first place. There was very little slap about it, and even less giggle - at least, if you were a St Charles College supporter. Some four overs into the reply, with Graham Koch (batting at No 3 above) at the crease, the weather gods decided enough was enough and dumped a whole lot of water on our oval. Although the covers were used, after a few balls once the shower was past, it was decided that the field was too wet to continue, and so the game was called off. Pity. It looked like an interesting encounter.

The photo below is a fairly typical summer scene at St Charles College as one of our 37 cricket sides, the Third XI in this instance, have some catching practice from Mr Andrew Rouse.

St Charles College Cricket First XI

Declaration game vs the rain

At Hilton College on Saturday, the Saints First XI had an frustrating game of cricket. Mr Dave Karlsen writes:

"Team: Gareth Dukes, Gregory Ford, Grant Stone, Mzamo Cele, Dean Robinson, Matthew Ford, Paul Vincent, Ryan Sclanders, Keagan Davids, Vaughn Moses, Burton Weakley, Matthew Tweddle.

One of the difficulties as a coach is to allow the team to make decisions even though you know that they are the wrong ones even if it causes an extreme amount of anguish.
After two very tough Day/Night hit-and-bash encounters in which we played better and better, and with a strong performance against Maritzburg College on a very poor and disintegrating surface where we lost narrowly, it was gratifying to see that the First XI had learnt some significant lessons.
Gareth Dukes, who had spent the whole of last Saturday under the trees, had obviously been absorbing as much knowledge as he could and it showed in a clever and thoughtful display as captain against Hilton.

Match report

Winning the toss on another fiercely hot summer’s day Dukes had no hesitation in putting the Saints in to bat. This St Charles did well and accumulated a very good 261 for 6 with Dean Robinson (33) and Ryan Sclanders (41)  setting up a good platform which Paul Vincent (25) and Grant Stone (26) built on with their  good form to produce two quick-fire innings. Skipper Dukes (68) and Matthew Ford (51*) then took the game away from Hilton.
With the Hilton team flagging in the heat Dukes declared as their mental state was at its lowest. The heat played havoc with the opening batsmen and at 13 for 3 they were in a lot of trouble.
With the score at 39 for 3 the heavens opened and with at least 37 overs left in the day Hilton would have been hard pressed to keep the rampant St Charles bowlers at bay.
It was a quality game of cricket with T Buckley and J Groom bowling very well for Hilton making it tough for the openers. Robinson and Sclanders showed real ability in making an excellent foundation for the rest of the batsmen.
Matthew Tweddle showed that he is in good form taking two of the early wickets, while Gareth Dukes picked up the other batsman who fell to a brilliant catch from our “pocket rocket” Mzamo Cele.

The Saints basketball court

Couldn't get louder, couldn't be tenser

IT WAS ONLY IN THE FOURTH QUARTER that this first team basketball game against visitors, Hilton College, came alive. Until then it had been pretty unadventurous with few lay-ups and even fewer rebounds. For both sides defence was order of the day as no quarter was given. With less than ten minutes to go, and the Hilton boys a basket ahead, suddenly the Saints upped their tempo. Coach Holcomb demanded 30 more points on the board, and it came alive with daring passes and shots at goal. St Charles had led narrowly for most of the game but it was Hilton's nudge into the lead which probably gave the Saints the impetus they needed. The Saints edged into the lead and with less than a minute to go and the score on 33 - 30, Ulli Fischer had a double penalty. He scored one point only and, on four seconds to full time (and the Saints supporters boogying noisily at the immanent victory), it was all over, bar the shouting - and there was plenty of that - final result - 34 - 30. Thanks for the visit Hilton, thanks for the games and well played all. Tux Khumalo (Saints No10) had a stormer of a game.

Inter-Schools' B-team gala

Saints swim well to win this one

THE POOL AT ST CHARLES COLLEGE was the place to be this afternoon as temperatures in the city rocketed to 40 degrees C. Invited to the Saints gala were the B-teams from Clifton (Durban), Hilton, Kearsney and Maritzburg College. It was a well-run affair, starting at 3:30 and finishing at 5pm. The Saints won the gala with Maritzburg College second, Hilton third and Kearsney fourth. Clifton did not participate. In the above photo, the lane allocations, from left, are: Hilton, Kearsney, St Charles, and MCollege. Well done to all the swimmers, and thanks for joining us this afternoon. Good luck in the Midmar Mile, guys.

Blazing hot day - 39 degrees C

Saints host Durban High School

THE FIRST XI SAINTS WERE HOME TO DHS today in cricket while the basketballers travelled to Durban. The results will be posted on the Results page of this web site presently.

Mr Dave Karlsen writes:

Team: Gregory Ford (Capt), Grant Stone, Mzamo Cele, Dean Robinson, Matthew Ford, Paul Vincent, Ryan Sclanders, Keagan Davids, Vaughn Moses, Dexter Hobbs, Burton Weakley

Lessons learnt and a lot of character was the order of the day against our illustrious opponents from Durban. On a blisteringly hot day, St Charles's Gregory Ford, skipper, encouraged by his team mates decided that the only way to get a result was to bowl first, and after ten overs the team realised the error of their decision. On a pitch that resembled the neighbouring N3 to Durban the DHS batsmen made them pay.

Match report

Although the batting was very slow at times and, to their credit, the St Charles lads made DHS fight for every run, the score grew inexorably upwards. While Burton Weakley and Grant Stone manfully shouldered the majority of the workload the DHS team declared at 261 for 1 after 75 overs. The SCC reply was too slow to get a result at 41 for 7 wkts and with the Saints truly beaten by the damages of heat and sun, two heroes appeared in the form of diminutive wicket keeper, Mzamo Cele, and Burton Weakley who added an 83-run partnership. Weakley sadly missed out on his well deserved 50 by wo runs. Cele and Grant Stone (half blinded by sun block) stubbornly saw out the remainder of the match, leaving DHS with some regret that a more positive declaration might have seen them victors in this tough encounter.
It was a tough and uncompromising encounter which had all the elements in it that make the game so fascinating. Hopefully the boys' schools marked return to a lot of declaration cricket will see the emergence of a number of really fast bowlers and spinners.

Format: Declaration Cricket

DHS 261 for 1 declared
J Grewar 108*, D Poole 115*
SCC 161 for 7 wickets
B Weakley 48, M Cele 49*
